Solley’s Katie Morrison embarks on Sumatra Trek raising funds for Kent charity Porchlight

Today, Friday 6th September 2024, Katie Morrison, co-owner & director of Solley’s, departs to embark on a challenging trek through the Sumatran jungle to raise money for Kent charity, Porchlight.

This challenge takes place in the mountainous Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the only places in the world where you can still see Sumatran orang-utans in the wild. Gibbons, hornbills, Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, sun bears and the elusive Sumatran tiger.

Having spent the past year training for the trek, during the challenge Katie will be:

• Trekking for around 5-7 hours per day, covering approximately 45kms over 5 days.

• Carrying all of her jungle gear on her back throughout each day,

• Battling the heat and humidity of the jungle,

• Sleeping in a shelter with the rest of the group, in the jungle environment,

• Attempting steep climbs and descents on muddy slopes, with the help of the occasional tree branch and ropes.

Porchlight help people who have nowhere to go and no-one to turn to. Some are homeless, others are struggling to cope with the pressures in their lives and need support to keep on track. Working across Kent and the south east, Porchlight help vulnerable and isolated people get support with their mental health, housing, education and employment. They provide children, young people and adults with the advice, guidance and skills to live independently in the future, play an active role in their local community and fulfil their potential.

Thanks to your generous donations to date, Katie has already hit her initial target of £5,000, and her JustGiving page will continue accepting donations throughout the duration of her trek – your continued support will certainly help encourage her along the way as well as making a huge difference to those who are helped by the work that Porchlight does.

A big thank you to all who have supported so far whether by attending Katie’s fundraising events, kindly donating or with words of support and encouragement, it really is hugely appreciated.  Thanks also to the following businesses who have generously sponsored Katie: Cook Fabrication, Parker’s Packaging, Consort Frozen Foods and Antonelli.
